I’m Not There (15)
Biopic, Drama, Music / 135 min. / English
Director and writer Todd Haynes presents this atypical, highly anticipated Bob Dylan biopic, through six characters: a gifted African-American child (Marcus Carl Franklin) who’s assumed the alias of Woody Guthrie; dulcet-toned folk artist/activist Jack Rollins (Christian Bale); Robbie Clark (the late Heath Ledger), the actor who plays Rollins in a film; Arthur Rimbaud (Ben Whishaw), a dour teen at an interrogation; Jude Quinn (Cate Blanchett), most recognizably Dylan in his post-folk heyday; and Billy the Kid (Richard Gere), an odd hermit farmer.
The film crosses decades, movements and genres. It incorporates songs by one of America’s greatest rock stars into its multifaceted story.
Like Dylan himself, I’m Not There is impossible to pin down.
We Own the Night (R)
Crime, Drama / 117 min. / English
In the late-1980s, newly named New York police captain Joe Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg) and Bobby (Joaquin Phoenix), his sexy, freewheeling brother, increasingly find themselves at odds.
Bobby seems to live in a haze of flashing lights, pot smoke, lines of cocaine and continuous Blondie songs, punctuated by routine hanky-panky with his exotic Puerto Rican girlfriend Amada (Eva Mendes).
Joe’s life consists of boring buffet dinners, a modest home and his three kids and wife. Joe’s only notable attribute is his insatiable desire to clean up New York’s streets.
Such tenacity in policing New York, however, leads to a tragic vendetta against the Grusinskys, which pushes Bobby to seek redemption through police work.
What Happens in Vegas (15)
Romantic Comedy / 98 min. / English
When Joy (Cameron Diaz) gets dumped by her boyfriend, she goes on vacation to Las Vegas. She’s after dancing and drunken debauchery, and that’s exactly what she gets - only to wake up next to a total stranger, Jack (Ashton Kutcher).
