Mother’s milk: There’s a thirsty demand for banks
Mothers breastfeed babies. Breastfeeding is thought to have health benefits. 아기에게 젖을 먹이고 있는 엄마들. 모유 수유는 아기가 건강하게 성장하는데 필요한 여러 요소를 가지고 있다.
Lee Sung-jin, 35, the father of an 8-month-old baby, sits anxiously inside the waiting room at Injung Hospital, northern Seoul. He is pale.
8개월 된 아기의 아버지 이성진(35)씨는 서울 강북에 있는 인정병원 대기실에서 불안한 표정으로 앉아 있었다. 그의 얼굴은 창백했다.

For the past four months, he has visited the hospital to buy human breast milk for his daughter. But he could leave empty-handed unless there’s milk in stock.
그는 지난 넉달 동안 이 병원에서 딸에게 먹일 모유를 구했다. 하지만 여분의 모유가 없을 경우 그냥 빈손으로 돌아갈 수도 있다.
As soon as a nurse calls him to confirm the hospital has 10 bottles of breast milk for his infant, he looks better.
“My wife has insufficient milk glands,” Lee says. “The milk we receive from other babies’ mothers through the human milk bank is the only choice we’ve got.”
병원에 아기를 위한 10병의 모유가 있다는 것을 알려주기 위해 간호사가 그를 부르자 그의 표정이 밝아졌다.
그는 "아내가 젖을 많이 짜내지 못한다"며 "다른 아기 엄마들에게서 받는 젖이 우리가 가진 유일한 선택"이라고 말했다.

What about the commercially prepared infant formulas, which can be a nutritious alternative to breast milk?
“She [our daughter] is formula intolerant,” he says, explaining that even one drop of formula leads to repeated vomiting and dehydration. “My baby cannot live without human milk.”
시중에서 판매하고 있는 분유는 어떤가. 영양소도 충분해 모유의 대용품이 될텐데 말이다.
이에 그는 "아기가 분유를 먹지 못한다"고 대답했다. 분유 한 방울만 먹어도 구토하고 탈수증세를 보인다는 것이다. "우리 아기는 모유 없이 살수 없어요."

Lee’s family isn’t the only one benefiting from breast milk donations.
According to Han Sung-hee, a deputy nurse at Injung Hospital, some 200 parents visit for a consultation every month.
But not all are lucky.
이씨 가족만이 모유 기증을 필요로 하는 것이 아니다. 인정병원의 한성희 부간호사에 따르면 매달 200여명의 부모들이 모유 수유 상담을 위해 병원을 찾는다. 하지만 모두를 만족시키지는 못한다.

“The number of donors is decreasing month by month,” she says. “And we are out of milk.”
The story is no different at other breast milk banks in Korea.
그는 "모유 기증자의 수가 매달 줄어들고 있다"며 "모유가 다 떨어졌다"고 말했다. 이런 상황은 국내 다른 모유 은행도 비슷하다.

Cha Seung-yoon, a chief director at Incheon Human Milk Bank, says that compared to the 90 donors last year from July to December, only 10 have given so far this year.
인천 모유은행의 차승윤 실장은 "지난해 7~12월에는 90명의 기증자가 있었는데 올해는 지금까지 열 명에 불과하다"고 말했다.
“Mothers today are more health-conscious ? they pursue well-being for their babies,” Han says. “And one way is breast feeding.”But not all mothers can breast feed.
한성희 간호사는 "요즘 엄마들은 어느 때 보다 아기들의 건강에 신경을 쓴다"며"그 중 하나가 모유 수유"라고 말했다. 하지만 모든 엄마들이 젖을 먹일 수 있는 것은 아니다.

For those with adopted children, insufficient milk glands, premature infants, cancer or have previously undergone plastic surgery on their breasts, breast feeding is not an option.
아이를 입양하거나 모유 생산이 충분치 않은 사람들 그리고 조산아 또는 암이나 가슴 성형 수술을 한 엄마들에게 모유 수유는 선택사항이 아니다.
