Administration wants to put a new spin on history textbooks
History textbooks are revised periodically while corrections are made every year.역사교과서는 주기적으로 수정된다.
After more than half a century since the Korean War (1950-1953) ended in an armistice, Cold War ideology is still very much a part of South Korean society, or at least with the older generation.

그간 사람들이 잊고 있었을지는 모르나 김도연 교육부 장관이 지난주 국무회의에서의 한 발언은 그런 기억을 되살려 준다.
“It seems that due to a biased history education, teenagers harbor anti-U.S. and anti-market economy feelings,” said the minister, who was replaced earlier this week * but not because he made such remarks.

그는 “왜곡된 역사 교육으로 인해 10대들이 반미, 반시장 정서를 가지게 된 듯 하다”고 말했다. 그는 이번주에 교체됐다. 하지만 교체의 이유가 그 발언때문은 아니다.
Kim lamented that teenagers are unaware of how the country achieved its rapid rise to an industrialized and full-fledged democratic nation. Prime Minister Han Seung-soo gave the minister a helping hand, underlining that some of the current textbooks have to be fixed, as they have gotten old and “times have changed.”

그는 청소년들이 한국이 경제적으로 얼마나 빠르게 성장했고 민주주의가 발전했는지 제대로 모르는 것을 안타까워했다. 한승수 국무총리는 시간적으로 오래됐고 시대가 변함에 따라 현재 교과서 가운데 일부는 수정되야 한다고 강조하며 김 전 장관에게 힘을 실어줬다.
He made clear that such a process would not be left to the expertise of academics alone but would involve a strong government dosage. “Rather than leaving the matter to scholars, each government department should summarize the wrong parts and let the Education Ministry handle it,” Han said.

그는 교과서 수정을 학계의 전문가들에게 맡겨두지 말고 정부 의견이 반영될 수 있도록 해야 한다고 밝혔다. 한 총리는 “그 문제를 학자들에게 맡기지 말고 정부 각 부서가 교과서의 잘못된 부분을 찾고 교육부가 이를 다루도록 해야 한다”고 말했다.
To no one’s surprise, such remarks drew immediate rebuke from the leftist Democratic Labor Party and the main opposition United Democratic Party. Both parties warned that such a move by the government was nothing but an attempt to groom citizens who are only pro-American and market-friendly.

당연하게도 이런 언급은 즉각 좌파 성향의 민주노동당과 야당인 민주당의 반발을 불러 일으켰다. 두 당은 정부의 그러한 시도는 친미, 시장 친화적인 국민만을 키우도록 하기 위한 것이라고 비난했다.

몇달째 계속되는 미국 소고기 수입 반대 시위가 이명박 정부를 곤경에 빠뜨리고 있는 가운데 -이 대통령은 이미 두번이나 사과했다- 나온 교육부 장관의 이같은 발언은 현재 진행되고 있는 사회적 상황의 원인이 무엇이 있는지에 대한 정부내 핵심 인사들의 속내를 보여준다.
“The fact that senior ministry officials have mentioned the modification of textbooks reveals just what the conservative leadership is thinking,” said Kim Hyeon-jong, a professor of history at the Korea National University of Education.

한국교원대 김형종 교수(역사학)는 “정부 고위관리가 교과서 수정을 언급했다는 것은 현재 보수지도층이 어떤 생각을 가지고 있는 지를 보여주는 것”이라고 말했다.
