Challenging emotions
A troupe of physically challenged actors and entertainers are running a series of performances for juvenile delinquents on probation or parole.

신체적인 장애를 가진 배우와 연예인들이 보호관찰 대상 비행 청소년을 위한 공연에 나섰다.
The troupe is called Ggungttari and comprises the visually impaired, amputees and paraplegics. It staged its first production before 200 teenagers and their guardians at the Seoul Probation and Parole Facilities in Huigyeong-dong, Dongdaemun District, last Saturday.

쿵따리로 불리는 이 공연단은 앞을 못보거나, 특정부위가 절단되었거나, 하반신이 마비된 사람들로 구성돼 있다. 이들은 지난 토요일 서울 동대문구 휘경동에 있는 서울보호관찰소에서 200명의 10대 청소년과 보호자를 상대로 첫 공연을 했다.
Ggungttari will stage nine other shows at juvenile halls this month. “We’ll be performing to 2,500 young people all told and we hope they take something away from our shows,” said Jeong Hyeon-ju from the Probation and Parole Division of the Justice Ministry, who helped launch the program.

쿵다리 공연단은 이번 달 9곳의 청소년 보호시설에서 공연을 할 계획이다. 공연을 후원하고 있는 법무부 보호관찰과 정현주 계장는 “2500명의 청소년을 상대로 공연을 할 예정”이라며 “이들이 이번 공연에서 뭔가를 얻을 수 있기를 바란다”고 말했다.
“The kids [in the audience] are emotionally scarred and closed off,” Jeong said. “Considering how introverted and passive they all are, we’re satisfied with the inaugural show.”

그는 “보호시설에 있는 청소년들은 마음의 상처가 깊고 꽉 닫혀 있다”며 “이들 모두가 얼마나 내성적이고 소극적인가를 생각하면 이번 첫 공연에 만족한다”고 말했다.
Gang Won-rae leads the troupe, and he hopes his story, which provides the main plot to the drama that Ggungttari performs, will inspire young people who have experienced emotional difficulties.

공연단을 이끌고 있는 강원래씨는 이번 공연이 정서적으로 어려움을 겪고 있는 청소년들에게 용기를 주는 계기가 되기를 바라고 있다. 쿵따리 공연의 주된 내용은 강씨의 이야기로 이뤄져 있다.
A motorcycle accident in 2000 left Gang, one half of the Korean dance music duo Clon, paralyzed from the waist down. Clon was a popular band in the 1990s, and Ggungttari was the name of one of Clon’s hit songs. It is also an onomatopoeic word for joy.

인기 듀엣 클론의 멤버였던 강씨는 2000년 오토바이 사고로 하반신이 마비됐다. 클론은 1990년대 높은 인기를 누렸고 쿵따리는 클론의 히트곡 제목이다. 즐거움을 나타내는 의성어이기도 하다.
The production that Ggungttari performs at the correctional facilities begins with a somber monologue delivered by Gang.“Having to live the rest of my life in this wheelchair… I lost the will to live,” he intones, as the audience watches video clips of his painful experience, from the accident to his eventual rehabilitation.

교정시설에서 펼쳐지는 쿵따리 공연은 강원래의 우울한 독백으로 시작한다. “이런 휠체어에서 남은 내 인생을 보내야만 한다… 살고 싶은 의지도 없다” 관객들이 그의 고통스런 경험을 담은 비디오를 보고 있는 가운데 강원래씨는 사고 순간부터 다시 설 때까지의 과정을 읊조린다.
But I had family, friends and fans rooting for me. They helped me get back on my feet,” he says.
“하지만 나의 가족, 친구와 팬은 나를 위해 응원했고 다시 설 수 있도록 도와주었다”고 그는 말한다.
