At 20, Shin is youngest to win the British Open

They call her the Queen of the Final Round for her penchant in Korea to stage late comebacks. The young Queen’s magic seems to work in England, too. After winning everything in sight in Korea, Shin Ji-yai picked up her first career LPGA Tour major victory yesterday at the Women’s British Open at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire, England.

한국에서 막판 역전우승을 많이 해서 사람들은 그녀를 마지막 라운드의 여왕이라고 부른다. 젊은 여왕의 마술이 영국에서도 통한 것 같다. 한국의 웬만한 대회에서 모두 우승했던 신지애는 어제 영국 버크셔 서닝데일 골프클럽에서 끝난 여자 브리티시 오픈에서 그녀의 LPGA 메이저대회 첫 우승컵을 거머쥐었다.
Trailing Yuri Fudoh of Japan by a shot entering the final round, Shin fired a bogey-free six-under 66 to finish 18 under par, three shots ahead of Taiwan’s Yani Tseng and four up on Fudoh.

At 20, Shin is the youngest champion of the 22nd Women’s British Open, beating her compatriot, Pak Se-ri, who won it at age 23. Shin is also the first non-LPGA member to win a major since Laura Davies did it at the 1987 U.S. Women’s Open. The win, worth $314,464, gives the Korean a pass to play full-time in the 2009 LPGA season.

신지애는 20세에 제22회 여자 브리티시 오픈을 우승하면서 23세에 이 대회에서 우승했던 같은 국적의 박세리를 제치고 최연소 우승 기록도 세웠다. 신지애는 또 1987년 로라 데이비스가 US 여자 오픈에서 우승한 이래 처음으로 LPGA 비회원으로 메이저 대회를 우승하는 기록도 세웠다. 이 우승으로 신지애는 상금 31만4천4백64달러와 함께 2009년 LPGA 시즌 모든 경기 출전 자격을 따냈다.
A Korean LPGA member and its career money leader, Shin was able to play in this major championship because she won the Korean money title in 2007. Shin added her name to a growing list of Korean winners on the LPGA tour in 2008. She is the fifth Korean to win this year, and second, after Park In-bee at the U.S. Women’s Open, to win a major.

한국 LPGA 회원이고 투어 통산 상금 1위인 신지애는 2007년 한국 상금 순위 1위 자격으로 이번 메이저 대회에 출전할 수 있었다. 신지애는 2008년 LPGA 한국인 우승자들의 명단에 자신의 이름을 올렸다. 그녀는 올해 LPGA 에서 우승한 다섯번째 한국인이고 US 여자 오픈에서 우승한 박인비에 이어 두번째로 메이저 대회 우승을 기록한 한국인이다.
“Last night, I couldn’t sleep because I was very nervous,” Shin told LPGA.com. “I am still nervous now. Today, everything was working very well so that gave me confidence. “My whole life, I’ve been waiting for this,” Shin added. “My dream came true.” The turning point of the championship came at the par-4 ninth hole. Tied with Shin at 14 under, Fudoh found two bunkers and settled for a bogey while Shin pulled off a birdie to move two shots ahead.

“어젯밤 너무 떨려서 잠을 잘 수가 없었다. 지금도 떨린다. 오늘 모든 게 잘 돼서 자신감을 회복했다.”고 신지애는 LPGA.com 인터뷰에서 말했다. “내 인생에서 난 이 순간을 기다려 왔다. 내 꿈이 이뤄졌다.”고 그녀는 덧붙였다. 파4 9번 홀에서 우승의 전기를 잡았다. 14언더파로 신지애와 공동선두를 달리던 후도가 벙커에 공을 두 번 빠뜨리면서 보기로 마무리했을 때 신지애는 버디를 잡아내 2타 차로 앞섰다.
