Protesters who stayed awake all night Saturday block traffic yesterday morning at an intersection at Gwanghwamun, central Seoul. Rally organizers ended the 72-hour marathon candlelight vigil last night, but demonstrators continued to demand a renegotiation of the U.S. beef import deal.

“우선 첫 문장에서 문장의 뼈대인 주어, 서술어, 목적어를 수식어와 구별해가며 파악해 보겠습니다. 주어는 protesters, 서술어는 block, 목적어는 traffic입니다. 우선 흐름을 느끼며 문장의 주성분들을 말해 보세요. Protesters(시위대가)….block(막다)….traffic(교통을)…. 다음으로 수식어 부분의 내용을 알아보겠습니다. ‘토요일 밤새 깨어있던’ 시위자들이 교통을 막은 것은 (yesterday) (morning) ‘어제’ ‘아침’입니다. 위치는 (at an intersection) ‘한 교차로에서’이고 이 곳은 (at Gwanghwamun, central Seoul) ‘도심 광화문에’ 있습니다. 이제 수식어까지 넣어서 문장 전체를 말해 보세요.”

“두 번째 문장은 중문으로 대등하게 두 개의 문장을 이어주는 등위접속사 but이 문장을 이어주고 있습니다. 먼저 앞 절의 뼈대와 접속사만 먼저 말해 보도록 하겠습니다. 대조, 대비의 뜻을 갖는 but의 느낌까지 가져보도록 하세요.
