Rock on, you monsters of metal
About 80,000 fans descended on Busan last year at the Eighth Busan International Rock Festival. 지난해 열린 제8회 부산 국제 락 페스티벌에는 8만여명이 찾아왔다.
Summer means vacations, beaches and ice cream for most people. But for music lovers, it’s time to rock and roll.
Rock festivals have sprung all over Korea over the past few years, most during the peak of the summer heat in July and August.

여름은 대부분의 사람들에게 휴가와 해변 그리고 아이스크림을 떠오르게 한다. 하지만 음악을 사랑하는 이들에게 여름은 락앤롤의 계절이다. 지난 몇 년 간 전국 곳곳에서 많은 락 페스티벌이 생겨났고 대부분 한여름인 7월과 8월에 열린다.
While some rock festivals try to invite international stars, others promote local bands. Y Not, above, will perform at rock festivals in Jebu and Busan.일부 락 페스티벌이 국제적인 스타를 참가시키려는 가운데 제부, 부산 락 페스티벌에서는 Y Not과 같은 국내 락 밴드가 공연에 참가한다.
올해에는 서해안의 관광지 제부도에 제부 락 페스티벌이 생겼다. 해변에서 약 2km 떨어진 제부도는 면적이 1평방 킬로미터가 채 안되는 섬으로 펄쩍 펄쩍 뛰고 기타를 치기엔 너무 작아보이는 곳이다.
Organizers expect about 150,000 fans to show up, mainly tourists, to see the acts, primarily amateur rockers rather than bona fide rock stars.

조직위원회는 관광객을 중심으로 약 15만명의 음악팬이 찾아올 것으로 예상하고 있다. 제부 락 페스티벌에서는 전문 락 밴드보다는 아마추어 락커들의 공연을 즐길 수 있다.
“Seven college bands will play on Day 1, and the next day six bands featuring office workers will take center stage,” said Park Il-young, one of the organizers. Guest bands like Prana and Lazybone will also strum and drum.
“There will be a different kind of fun from other rock festivals,” said Park with confidence.

조직위 관계자는 "7개의 대학밴드가 첫날 공연하고 그 다음날에는 직장인으로 구성된 여섯 개 밴드가 무대를 채울 것"이라고 말했다. 내 귀에 도청장치 (Prana)와 레이지본 같은 초청 밴드의 공연도 있다. 그는 "다른 락 페스티벌에서 느낄 수 없는 재미가 있을 것"이라고 자신있게 밝혔다.
The Busan International Rock Festival in the southern port city of Busan also takes advantage of its picturesque location. Now in its ninth year, the festival is hoping to attract more than just die-hard rock fans.

남쪽의 항구도시 부산에서는 아름다운 풍광을 앞세운 부산 국제락페스티벌이 열린다. 올해 9회째로 조직위원회는 락에 정통한 사람들 뿐 아니라 음악을 사랑하는 사람들이 많이 찾아올 것으로 기대하고 있다.
“That is why we’ve invited familiar local bands whose voices and songs are easily recognized, like the Hot Potato and Kang Saneh, instead of iconic international groups,” said Noh Ho-seong, part of the organizing committee.

조직위원회 관계자는 "우리가 유명한 해외 그룹보다 뜨거운 감자나 강산에와 같은 국내의 유명 락 밴드를 초청하는 이유이기도 하다"고 말했다.
The Busan rockathon is funded by the local government, but this year the budget has been slashed by 100 million won ($99,302). Despite this financial setback, entrance will still be free.
“Similar to last year, we expect about 80,000 fans to turn up,” said Noh.

부산 락 페스티벌은 부산시의 지원을 받고 있다. 올해는 예산이 1억원이나 줄어 재정적으로 어렵지만 입장은 계속 무료로 한다.
조직위 관계자는 "지난해와 비슷한 약 8만명이 찾아올 것"으로 예상했다.
Busan won’t just be turning the volume to 11. There'll be more sedate activities at the gigs, such as a dance festival, magic show and salsa and jazz nights.

부산에서는 락 페스티벌만 열리는 것은 아니다. 보다 조용한 공연, 예를 들어 댄스경연대회, 마술쇼, 그리고 살사와 재즈의 밤과 같은 행사도 진행된다.
