Hu and Lee map out new ties during Seoul summit

In his first overseas trip after hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, President Hu Jintao met with his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak in Seoul yesterday to map out the details of their plan to upgrade bilateral relations.

2008년 베이징 올림픽 개최 후 첫 외국 방문으로 어제 서울에 온 후진타오 중국 국가주석은 이명박 한국 대통령을 만나 양국관계를 승격시키는 구체적인 방안들을 계획했다.
Hu arrived in Seoul yesterday afternoon for a two-day state visit. It was his second trip to South Korea as president, following his first visit in November 2005. The summit with Lee is their third meeting since Lee took office in February.

후 주석은 이틀 일정의 국빈 방문으로 어제 오후 서울에 도착했다. 후 주석은 2005년 11월 처음으로 방한했으며, 국가주석으로는 이번이 두 번째 방한이다. 이 대통령이 올해 2월 취임한 이후 세 번째 가진 정상회담이다.
They met briefly in Beijing on Aug. 9 as Lee traveled to China for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games. Lee and Hu had their first summit in Beijing in May and announced their agreement to upgrade South Korea and China’s relations to a “strategic cooperative partnership.”

이 대통령이 베이징 올림픽 개막식 참석차 중국을 방문했을 때 두 정상은 8월9일 베이징에서 잠시 만났었다. 두 정상은 5월 베이징에서 첫 번째 정상회담을 갖고 한중 관계를 “전략적 협력 동반자 관계”로 격상키로 한 합의를 발표했었다.
Yesterday’s talks were largely focused on mapping out the specific action plans about how they will achieve that partnership for this relatively young, but rapidly expanding, relationship.
South Korea and China tied the diplomatic knot only 16 years ago.

어제 회담은 상대적으로 역사가 짧지만 빠르게 확대되고 있는 한중 관계를 전략적 협력 동반자로 격상시키는 구체적인 행동계획을 세밀히 세우는데 주안점을 두었다. 한국과 중국은 불과 16년 전에 외교관계를 수립했다.
A 34-point joint statement was released following the summit and a memorandum of understanding was signed covering several key areas. A series of efforts to deepen the ties, largely based on economic and cultural exchanges, were announced.

정상회담 후 34개 항의 공동성명을 발표했고 주요 분야의 양해각서에 서명했다. 주로 경제와 문화 교류를 기반으로 한 여러 가지 관계 증진 방안들을 발표했다.
“To fully implement the agreements made, there will be bilateral consultations between the two countries’ foreign ministries, economic and trade joint committees and a tourism ministers’ conference,” according to the joint statement. Lee and Hu agreed yesterday to maintain frequent presidential exchanges.

공동성명에 따르면 “합의사항을 충실히 이행하기 위해 양국 외교부, 경제 통상 공동 위원회와 관광 담당 장관 회의 등 쌍무 협의기구들을 설치한다.” 이 대통령과 후 주석은 어제 정상간 교류를 자주 갖기로 합의했다.
