Novelist Lee Oi-soo, 62, is as eccentric as they come.Ever since he published his first short story, “Apprenticeship,” in the Kangwon Ilbo in 1972, Lee has been questioning authority and our ideas about life and art.

소설가 이외수(62)는 기인 중의 기인이다. 1972년 첫 단편 소설 “견습 아이들”을 강원일보에 발표한 이래 그는 인생과 예술에 대한 권위과 전통적인 사고에 의문을 제기해 왔다.
On a severe winter day, Lee found himself a secluded place in the mountains absorbed in writing. For every meal, he cooked rice and put it outside in the cold to freeze.

*freeze : 얼음이 얼다, 얼 정도로 춥다
살을 에이는 추운 겨울날, 그는 외딴 산 속에 앉아 글쓰기에 빠졌고 식사때는 밥을 지은 후 밖에 내놓고 얼렸다.
“It was pathetically cold,” Lee said, brushing back his long gray hair. “I munched rice using a hammer and nail instead of a spoon,” he said. “The chill seemed to clarify my soul.” There’s more.

기다란 회색 머리를 빗으며 그는 “너무나 추웠다”고 회상했다. “숫가락 대신에 망치와 못으로 밥을 깨가며 먹었다”며 “그 냉기가 내 영혼을 맑게 해주는 것 같았다”고 말했다.
He didn’t bathe for four years. He thought washing would take away his soul.
The year Lee got married, 1976, he was diagnosed as an alcoholic. When he started drinking, he could binge for three days nonstop.

4년 동안 목욕도 하지 않았다. 몸을 씻으면 영혼이 날아가 버릴 것이라 생각했기 때문이다.
결혼한 해인 1976년 그는 알콜중독자로 진단받았다. 술을 마시기 시작하면 3일 밤낮을 술로 지냈다.
“The morning after being drunk, I found myself waking up inside a doghouse or trash can,” he said. And there were liquor bottles everywhere. He also lost weight from 45 kilograms (99 pounds) to 38 kilograms and his hands would shake.
그는 “술 마신 다음날, 일어나 보면 개집이나 쓰레기통 옆에서 자고 있었다”고 말했다. 주변엔 온통 술병이 널려 있었다.
몸무게도 45kg에서 38kg으로 줄었고 손을 덜덜 떨었다.
Recovering from the addiction was painful but Lee says every emotion helped his writing become more descriptive.
“It allowed me to build up my moral strength ? besides, there’s no gain without pain,” he said.

알콜 중독에서 빠져 나오는 과정은 고통스러웠다. 하지만 그가 겪은 모든 감정은 그의 글쓰기를 보다 풍부하게 했다.
그는 “그러한 것들은 나의 도덕적인 힘을 보다 강하게 만들었다. 고통없는 댓가는 없다”고 말했다
This pain grew into his first full-length novel, “The Dreaming Plant,” in 1978. The book left him in anguish. The editor of the publishing company ran away after signing the contract, leaving him with no royalties.

이러한 고통은 그의 첫 장편 소설로 이어져 1978년 “꿈꾸는 식물” 이 나왔다. 하지만 그 책은 그를 고통으로 몰아 넣었다. 출판사 편집자가 계약후 도망가 버려 한푼의 인세도 받을 수 없었다.
As you might expect, the characters in Lee’s tales are mostly full of despair. His later stories turn away from realism and start to depict a kind of utopian world, like in “The Person Off-board” (2005).

그의 소설 속에 등장하는 인물은 대부분 절망으로 가득차 있다. 그의 최근 소설은 리얼리즘에서 벗어나 “장외인간”에서 보여지듯 유토피아적인 세상을 그리고 있다.
He’s written some 20 books over his 30-year career. “Nourishment can either decay or ferment over time,” Lee said. “And the same can be applied to human souls. As people age, their souls either corrupt or grow in wisdom.” Lee proudly says the arts are the best way of keeping souls healthy.

그는 지난 30여년 동안 약 20권의 책을 썼다. 그는 “음식은 시간이 지나면 썩거나 발효작용을 한다”며 “인간의 영혼도 마찬가지다. 나이가 들면서 인간의 영혼는 타락하거나 현명해 진다”고 말했다. 그는 영혼은 건강하게 유지하는 가장 좋은 방법이 예술이라고 자신있게 말했다.
