응원에 휘둘리는 심판 문제도 있다. 2002년 5월 영국의 ‘뉴사이언티스트’지에 실린 연구 결과다. 연구팀은 47가지의 태클상황을 두 그룹의 심판에게 보여주고 파울 여부를 판정케 했다. 그 결과 홈 관중의 함성을 들려준 심판 그룹은 그렇지 않은 그룹에 비해 홈팀에 15%나 적게 파울을 선언했다.
