Won’s fall hurting students studying overseas

eon Hae-yeon, a Korean student living in New York, has moved to a smaller studio apartment before beginning a new semester this month.

뉴욕에 거주하는 한국 유학생 전해연씨는 이달 새 학기가 시작되기 전에 더 작은 원룸형 아파트로 이사했다.
“My parents are having a hard time sending me money for tuition because the dollar has become so expensive to buy. I have no choice but to save as much as I can,” said the 25-year-old, who is pursuing a graduate degree in cello performance.

첼로 전공으로 석사학위를 이수하고 있는 25세의 이 학생은 “달러가 너무 비싸져서 부모님께서 내 학비 송금을 힘겨워 하신다. 그러니 내가 할 수 있는 한 많이 절약하는 수 밖에 없다.”고 말했다.
“Housing costs in the United States have swollen lately and fuel prices have shot up. Some of my Korean friends are also considering relocating to unfurnished residences that are cheaper and smaller.”

“미국은 최근 주거비용이 크게 올랐고 유류가격이 치솟았다. 몇몇 유학생 친구들도 좀 더 싸고 작은 가구가 비치되지 않은 집으로 이사하는 것을 고려하고 있다.”
Jeon is one of tens of thousands of Korean students abroad who are seriously affected by the won’s latest drop against the dollar. The won, which had steadily stayed in the lower 900 range last year, unexpectedly plummeted to 1,000 against the greenback in May.

전씨는 최근 치솟는 원달러 환율로 심각하게 타격을 입고 있는 수만 명의 한국인 유학생들 가운데 한 명이다. 원화는 지난해까지 900원대 초반에 머물러 있었는데 5월에 갑자기 1000원대로 치솟았다.
Its sustained decline has recently sent it to the lowest level in four years. In August, the won fell 7 percent, the most since 1998 when the country as well as other Asian neighbors suffered a currency meltdown.

최근 원화가치가 지속적으로 하락하면서 4년 만에 최저치에 도달했다. 8월에는 원화가치가 7% 떨어져 한국과 아시아 국가들이 외환위기를 겪었던 1998년 이후 최고 원달러 환율을 기록했다.
As of yesterday, it cost 1,153.84 won to buy one U.S. dollar, without currency-exchange commission, whereas the cost was 953.8 won a year ago. Suppose the tuition fee for a semester is $14,000, the price difference in won terms over the one-year period amounts to 2.8 million won. That’s close to the monthly wage of an entry-level worker at a large Korean conglomerate.

외환 수수료를 제외하고 1달러를 사는 가격은 1년 전에는 953.8원이었는데 어제 현재 가격은 1,153.84원이었다. 만약 한 학기 등록금이 1만4천 달러라면 1년 사이에 한 학기 등록금 차이가 2백80만원이나 된다. 이 금액은 한국 대기업에서 입사 첫해 받는 월급 수준이다.
