간신과 영신
간신의 간(奸)이라는 글자는 ‘거짓의 정성스러움’을 나타낸다. 임금에게 제대로 충성치 않으나 나름대로 의욕을 부리다가 일을 그르치는 신하가 간신이다.그러나 간신을 규정하는 것은 쉽지 않다. 보는 각도에 따라 평가는 늘 달라질 수 있기 때문이다. 평가가 좋을 경우에는 충신이고, 그 반대일 경우는 간신이다.

His adviser, Wei Zhongxian, ⓑis the typical yeong-shin, who who gained promotion to high positions by lavishing all manner of flatteries ⓒto the emperor to earn his favor. Wei ⓓmonopolized power in the name of Emperor Tianqi, who was more interested in carpentry than power, thus propelling the dynasty’s demise.
