표면에 ‘무하마드의 사다리’ 무늬가 새겨진 이 칼은 아름답다. 그러나 제조 방법은 끔찍하다. 신전에 기록된 연대기에는 ‘왕의 옷과 같은 자홍색이 날 때까지 쇠를 달군 뒤 튼튼한 노예의 근육에 찔러넣어 식힌다’고 했다. 그래야 ‘노예의 힘과 영혼이 옮겨가 단단한 칼을 얻는다’는 것이다.

그러나 2년 전 ‘네이처’지는 세상을 놀라게 했다. 독일 드레스덴대학 연구팀이 이 검에서 탄소나노튜브(CNT)를 발견한 것이다. 연구팀은 “소결(燒結)과 단조(鍛造) 과정에서 불순물이 촉매로 작용해 탄소가 나노튜브 형태로 바뀌었다”고 소개했다. 최첨단 신소재가 수수께끼의 칼에도 숨어있는 셈이다.
