Obama makes American history

바락 오바마 민주당 상원의원이 "미국에 변화를 가져오겠다"는 약속과 함께 경쟁후보 존 메케인을 압도적으로 이기고 어제 미국 최초 흑인 대통령 당선인이 됐다.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak wasted no time in sending congratulations to Obama and Vice President-elect Joseph Biden, urging further improvement of U.S.-South Korea relations.

이명박 한국 대통령은 오바마와 부통령 당선인 조셉 바이든에게 곧바로 축하 서한을 보냈으며, 한미관계의 증진을 역설했다.
“Korean government believes that Obama’s victory is the outcome of Americans’ support for his promise of hope and change,” presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan said in a statement.
“President Lee has consistently emphasized the importance of change and reform since he assumed office, and the two leaders share a common philosophy in those areas.”

이동관 청와대 대변인은 성명을 통해 “우리 정부는 오바마의 승리는 미국인들이 희망과 변화를 약속한 오바마를 지지한 결과라고 믿는다.”고 말했다.
“이명박 대통령은 취임 이후 시종일관 변화와 개혁의 중요성을 강조해왔다. 두 지도자들은 이 부분에서 일맥상통하는 정치철학을 공유하고 있다.”
The Blue House said it welcomes Obama's support for the U.S.-Korea alliance and expressed high hope that Biden will continue to play an important role in further deepening the two countries' ties.

Republican Senator McCain conceded defeat and congratulated his rival around 1:30 p.m. Seoul time. With four states still to be decided, the electoral vote count was 338 for Obama and 155 for McCain, the New York Times reported at 8:35 p.m. in Seoul. It takes 270 electoral votes to be elected. With a few votes still trickling in on the West Coast, Obama had 53 percent of 117,369,000 votes cast - the first Democratic presidential candidate to pass the 50 percent threshold since Jimmy Carter beat Gerald Ford in 1976.

메케인 공화당 상원의원은 한국시각으로 오후 1시30분쯤 패배를 인정하고 경쟁후보에게 축하의 메시지를 전했다. 아직 네 개 주의 개표 결과가 남아있는 상태에서 오바마는 338명의 선거인단을 확보했고 메케인은 155명을 확보했다고 뉴욕타임즈가 오후 8시35분(한국시간)에 보도했다. 대통령으로 선출되려면 선거인단 270명을 확보해야 한다.
서부해안 지역에서 아직도 개표결과가 천천히 나오고 있지만, 오바마는 총 투표수 1억1천7백36만9천의 53%를 득표했다. 1976년 지미 카터가 제랄드 포드를 이긴 이후 민주당 대통령 후보로는 처음으로 득표율 50%대를 넘어섰다.
