[LETTERS to the editor]A visa solution
While I appreciate Limb Jae-un’s efforts to expose the problems that foreign teachers face when teaching at Korean hagwon, I think the article should have mentioned the simple solution: Let foreign teachers own their visas. Let teachers register with the Korean government without the participation of their hagwon. Teachers will be then in control of their lives and jobs. Hagwon might have to pay a bit more, but could save on housing, plane fare and other administrative costs. This is how it works in Japan, and from perusing various online discussion communities, I think teachers in Japan are in general happier with their employment.
