다이아몬드

인류가 다이아몬드에서 찾아낸 첫 용도는 연마제였다. 4500년 전의 중국 신석기 시대 돌도끼에서 그 흔적이 발견됐다. 루비와 사파이어 성분이 포함된 돌도끼의 표면이 거울처럼 매끄럽게 갈려있는 것이다. 2005년 이를 조사한 미국 하버드대학 연구팀은 “다이아몬드를 연마제로 사용하지 않고서는 있을 수 없는 결과”라고 결론지었다.

보석으로 대접받기 시작한 것은 15세기께 연마법이 발견된 이후의 일이다. 여기에는 일화가 전해온다. 베네치아에서 금속 세공을 하던 가난한 청년이 주인집 외동딸을 사랑했다. 주인은 조건을 내건다. “다이아몬드를 연마할 방법을 찾아오면 딸을 주겠다.” 흠집조차 낼 수 없는 원석을 무슨 수로 갈아낼 것인가. 청년은 기어이 답을 찾아낸다. 다이아몬드끼리 서로 비빌 때 떨어지는 미세한 가루를 연마제로 사용하는 것이다.
