Historic meeting leads to consensus on economic crisis

The leaders from the major industrialized and developing countries also expressed a determination to reject protectionism in the wake of massive economic fallout, vowing not to build new trade barriers or restrictions on imports for the next year.

“We must lay the foundation for reform to help ensure that a global crisis such as this one does not happen again,” they said in a statement after a five-hour session on Nov. 15 in U.S. time.

5시간에 걸친 회의를 한 뒤 미국시각 11월15일 발표한 공동선언문에서 정상들은 “우리는 이 같은 세계적 위기가 다시는 발생하지 않도록 개혁의 기초를 놓아야 한다”고 말했다.
As root causes of the recent economic meltdown, the leaders cited unsound risk management practices, increasingly complex and opaque financial products and inconsistent and insufficiently coordinated macroeconomic policies. The leaders vowed to strengthen financial market transparency through “enhancing required disclosure on complex financial products and ensuring complete and accurate disclosure” by financial firms.

정상들은 불건전한 위험관리 방식들, 점점 복잡해지고 불투명해진 금융상품들, 일관성 없고 충분히 조율되지 않은 거시경제정책들 등을 최근 경제위기의 근본원인으로 꼽았다. 정상들은 복잡한 금융상품과 금융회사 재무상황을 완전하고 정확하게 공시하도록 함으로써 금융시장 투명성을 강화하기로 했다.
They promised to reform international financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank so developing nations have a greater voice in policies. The leaders also voiced concern about a possible rise in protectionism in the wake of the economic crisis, and pledged they would avoid “raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services, imposing new import restrictions, or implementing World Trade Organization-inconsistent measures to stimulate exports.”

정상들은 국제통화기금(IMF)과 세계은행과 같은 국제 금융기구에서 신흥국의 발언권을 강화하기로 했다. 정상들은 또 경제위기의 여파로 생길 지 모를 보호무역주의에 대해 우려를 표명했다. 정상들은 “상품과 서비스의 무역이나 투자에 새로운 장벽을 만들지 않고, 수입 제한조치를 추가하지 않으며, WTO와 모순되는 수출장려 정책을 시행하지 않을 것”을 맹세했다.
