Sex slave museum takes flak from freedom fighters

Five elderly women bundled up in hats, mufflers and gloves sat themselves in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul at noon last Wednesday.

The pensioners are among the last of the surviving Korean comfort women, a euphemistic term for women forced to provide sexual services to Japanese soldiers during World War II.

이 노인들은 마지막 남은 위안부 할머니들이다. 위안부는 2차 대전 당시 일본 군인들에게 강제로 성적인 서비스를 제공해야 했던 여성을 완곡하게 표현하는 말이다.
They have been meeting in front of the embassy every Wednesday at noon since 1992 to demand that Japan apologize and compensate the women for coerced wartime prostitution.

그들은 전쟁중의 강제 매춘에 대한 일본의 사과와 보상을 요구하는 집회를 1992년부터 매주 수요일 대사관앞에서 열고 있다.
But today the women and their supporters, mainly activists, professors and students, are facing another battle, one that has pit them against the men who fought for Korea’s freedom against Japan during the colonial period (1910-1945).

하지만 이번에 위안부 출신 할머니들과 이들의 후원자들은 - 대부분 사회운동가, 교수, 학생들인데- 지금까지와 다른 상대와 맞서 싸우고 있다. 다름아닌 일제 식민시절 (1910-1945)의 독립투사들이다.
Earlier this month, former independence fighters and their descendants held a press conference to harshly denounce plans to erect a museum for the comfort women in Independence Park in Seodaemun District, northern Seoul. The press conference was organized by the Korea Liberation Association.

이달 초 과거의 독립 투사들과 그 후손들은 서울 서대문 독립공원내에 위안부 박물관을 세우는 계획을 강력히 비난하는 기자회견을 했다.
“The proposed museum denigrates the independence movement and the men who gave their lives as patriotic martyrs for the liberation of Korea,” said Kim Yeong-il, the association’s president, at the Nov. 3 press conference.
*denigrates : 검게 하다;더럽히다;모욕하다, (명예를) 훼손하다

이달 3일 열린 기자회견에서 광복회의 김영일 회장은 “(독립공원내에) 박물관을 세우는 것은 독립운동가들과 독립운동을 폄하시키는 것”이라고 말했다.
“The museum will surely create a false image about our history by highlighting our suffering rather than our many military achievements,” Kim added
그는 “박물관은 우리가 했던 투쟁보다 받은 수난만 강조함으로써 우리 역사에 대한 혼동을 줄 수 있다”이라고 덧붙였다.
Since 2003, the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan has been hoping to build the museum, which is to be called the War and Women’s Rights Museum.
The aim is to raise awareness about sexual slavery during the colonial period.

한국정신대문제대책협의회는 2003년 부터 전쟁과 여성 인권 박물관이라는 명칭을 가진 위안부 박물관 건립을 추진하고 있다.
일제 식민지 시절의 고통받은 위안부에 대한 인식을 더 높이기 위해서다.
