After the tears, a gracious Kim is thankful for medal

Sometimes, expectations only beget huge disappointments. At last weekend’s International Skating Union Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, Kim Yu-na’s first international senior competition on home ice, it was difficult to overstate the pressure and expectations under which she performed.

때때로 큰 기대는 큰 실망을 낳는다. 지난 주말 모국인 한국에서 처음으로 열린 국제빙상연맹 피겨스케이팅 파이널 경기에서 김연아는 엄청난 기대 때문에 큰 부담을 떠안고 연기를 펼쳤다.
With all due respect to other competitors in other disciplines, the event was built up in such a fashion that it was Kim and then everyone else, world champions or former Grand Prix winners be damned.
다른 경쟁자들도 주목을 받아야 함에도 불구하고, 김연아만 집중조명을 받았고 다른 선수들은 세계 챔피언들이건 전 그랑프리 챔피언들이건, 모두 무시당하는 분위기였다.
But Kim couldn’t quite deliver for the home fans, finishing second after a mistake-filled free skate on Saturday. She managed 120.41 points for a total of 186.35. Her archrival, Mao Asada of Japan, had a better free skate, scoring 123.17 points to finish at 188.55.

그러나 김연아는 토요일 프리 스케이팅에서 실수를 연발하면서 2위에 그쳐 국내 팬들의 기대에 완전히 부응하지는 못했다. 김연아는 프리 스케이팅에서 120.41점을 얻어 합계 186.35점을 받았다. 그녀의 라이벌 일본의 아사다 마오는 프리 스케이팅에서 더 나은 연기로 123.17점을 따내 합계 188.55점으로 마무리했다.
Kim led Asada by 0.56 points after Friday’s short program but couldn’t hold on to the narrow advantage. Before her free skate, Kim looked unusually tense. And though she had a clean start, Kim managed only a single rotation on her triple lutz, normally her strong jump, for the second straight day and then fell on her triple salchow in the latter part of her program.

김연아는 금요일 쇼트프로그램에서 0.56점 차이로 아사다 마오를 앞섰으나, 간발의 선두를 끝까지 지켜내지 못했다. 프리 스케이팅 연기를 시작하기 전 김연아는 평소와는 다르게 긴장하는 모습을 보였다. 시작은 좋았으나, 평소에는 가장 잘하는 트리플 러츠 점프에서 이틀 연속 한번 밖에 회전하지 못했고 연기 후반부 트리플 살코우 점프에서 넘어졌다.
Kim led the field in program component score, which assesses choreography and interpretation among others, but couldn’t overcome her miscues on the jumps. “I am disappointed that I made mistakes in my first event in Korea,” Kim said. “But this was also a great learning experience for me. I am happy that I won a medal at home.”

김연아는 안무와 곡 해석 등을 평가하는 프로그램 구성 점수에서는 앞섰으나 점프 실책들을 만회할 수 없었다. 김연아는 “한국에서 처음으로 펼친 경기에서 실수를 해서 아쉽다. 그러나 많은 것을 배울 수 있었던 기회였다. 모국에서 메달을 따서 기쁘다.”고 말했다.
