The afternoon school bell rings at Hanbit School for the Blind and Yu-jin rushes to her art class. She’s the first student to arrive.

She gives each of the volunteer teaching assistants a hug and then one of them brings her a box of paint and a sketchpad. And so the class begins. The volunteer dips a paintbrush into a paper cup filled with water and then places it in Yu-jin’s hand.

그녀는 수업을 도와주는 자원봉사 보조교사들 한 명 한 명을 껴안았고 자원봉사자 가운데 한 명이 그녀에게 물감과 스케치북을 건넸다. 그리고 수업은 시작됐다. 그 보조 교사는 물이 들어있는 종이컵에 붓을 담근 후 유진이의 손에 쥐어 주었다.
"What color do you want?” the assistant asks the fourth grader, directing her hand and the brush to the palette of colors.
“Give me red,” Yu-jin asks the assistant teacher. “It’s the same color as my sweatshirt.”

보조교사는 4학년생인 유진이의 손과 붓을 여러 색의 물감이 담겨 있는 팔레트쪽으로 향하게 하며 "어떤 색이 좋아?" 하고 물었다.
유진이는 "빨간색을 주세요" 라고 교사에게 부탁하며 " 그건 제가 입은 셔츠랑 같은 같은 색입니다"라고 말했다.
Minutes later, Yu-jin is filling the page of the sketchpad with brush strokes reminiscent of Kandinsky’s bold musical artwork. The 12-year-old artist then chooses yellows and reds and creates a colorful assemblage in her distinctive rhythmic manner.

잠시 후 유진이는 칸딘스키의 대담한 예술 작품을 연상시키는 붓 터치로 스케북을 채워나갔다. 12살의 꼬마 예술가는 노랑과 붉은색을 선택해 자신만의 독특한 리듬감으로 작품을 만들었다.
Art teachers at Hanbit remember their first perplexing encounter with Yu-jin, an epileptic and one of the school’s 145 visually impaired students. Using only a crayon, she reluctantly drew a tiny circle on the edge of her sketchpad and then sat through the rest of the class with her head downcast.

미술 선생님들은 145명의 시각장애 학생의 한 명이자 간질병을 가지고 있는 유진이를 처음 만났을 때의 당혹스러움을 기억한다. 유진이는 내키지 않은 표정으로 크레용만을 가지고 스케치북 모서리에 작은 원을 그렸고 나머지 시간에는 고개를 숙이고 풀이 죽은채 앉아 있었다.
In the first few weeks, the teachers noticed her distracted emotions. When Yu-jin first came to the school, she had been so severely abused at home that her elbow joint has been permanently damaged.

몇 주가 안돼 교사들은 유진이의 심리 상태가 안정적이지 않다는 것을 알게됐다. 처음 맹학교에 왔을 때, 유진이는 집에서 너무 심하게 학대를 받아 팔꿈치 부분은 영구히 손상된 상태였다.
Another student, Park Hyuk, had faced similar challenges. Hyuk defected from North Korea with his mother and older sister two years ago, and until he started at Hanbit last year, he had never had any formal training in art.

또 다른 학생인 박혁도 비슷했다. 혁이는 어머니, 누나와 함께 2년 전 북한을 탈출했다. 그는 지난해 한빛 맹학교에서 공부를 시작하기 전에는 어떤 미술 교육도 받은 적이 없었다.
He had a hard time coping with day to day school life in Seoul at first.
