Fire claims six lives in protester eviction

Five protesters and a member of a police SWAT team died and 24 others were hospitalized following a violent standoff at a construction site in central Seoul early yesterday.

어제 아침 서울 도심의 건설 현장에서 발생한 격렬한 대립으로 농성자 5명과 경찰 특공대원 1명이 사망하고 24명이 다쳐 병원에 입원했다.
According to police, protesters took over a five-story structure near the Kukje building and Yongsan train station at 5:30 a.m. Monday, in opposition to ongoing redevelopment of the area. Some squatters demanded higher compensation for their houses and stores, which are to be demolished for a massive development project by the nation’s construction giants - Samsung C&T Corporation, Daelim and Posco.

경찰에 따르면 농성자들은 진행중인 재개발사업에 반대하며 월요일 오전 5시30분쯤 용산역과 국제빌딩 인근 5층 건물을 점거했다. 일부 철거민들은 삼성C&T, 대림, 포스코 등 대형 건설사들이 추진하는 대규모 재개발 사업으로 헐리게 될 자신들의 집과 상점에 대해 높은 보상금을 요구했다.
Police said the demonstrators built a watchtower on the rooftop and armed themselves with Molotov cocktails, bottles of acid, bricks and slingshots. Police issued an ultimatum to the protesters to move out by Monday night or be forcibly removed. Around 6:45 a.m. yesterday, a crane lifted a container box carrying the SWAT teams.

경찰은 농성자들이 건물 옥상에 망루를 짓고 화염병, 염산병, 벽돌, 새총 등으로 무장했다고 말했다. 경찰은 농성자들에게 월요일 밤까지 떠나지 않으면 강제로 진압하겠다는 최후통첩을 보냈다. 어제 아침 6시45분쯤 크레인으로 경찰 특공대원들이 탄 컨테이너 박스를 들어 올렸다.
“When the SWAT teams tried to enter the watchtower around 7:26 a.m., the demonstrators sprayed paint thinner and threw Molotov cocktails,” Baek Dong-san, chief of Yongsan Police who commanded the operation, said during a press briefing. “The watchtower caught fire and police withdrew. We managed to put out the fire by 8 a.m. and found five bodies, including one police officer.” A further search yielded one more body. Yongsan police said that of the 24 others who were injured during the stand-off, 18 were police officers.

이 진압작전을 지휘한 백동산 용산경찰 서장은 기자회견에서 “오전 7시26분쯤 경찰 특공대원들이 망루로 진입을 시도할 때 농성자들이 시너를 뿌리고 화염병을 던졌다. 망루는 화염에 휩싸였고 경찰 특공대는 철수했다. 오전 8시까지 화재를 진압했고 경찰 특공대원 1명을 포함한 시체 5구를 발견했다.”고 말했다. 추가 수색으로 시체 한 구를 더 찾았다. 용산 경찰은 진압과정에서 24명이 다쳤고 이 가운데 18명은 경찰관이라고 밝혔다.
Kim Nam-hun, a 30-year-old SWAT team member of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, was killed during the operation, police said. The other bodies were not identified, but the National Institute of Scientific Investigation said fingerprints should allow identification by tomorrow. Prime Minister Han Seung-soo issued a statement at 3 p.m. promising that the government will do everything to prevent a recurrence of what he called an “extremely regretful and unfortunate” incident.

서울경찰청 소속 김남훈(30) 경찰 특공대원이 진압작전 도중 사망했다고 경찰은 밝혔다. 다른 시체의 신원은 아직 확인되지 않았다. 국립과학수사대는 지문으로 내일쯤 신원을 확인할 수 있다고 말했다. 한승수 국무총리는 오후 3시쯤 “매우 유감스럽고 불행한” 사태의 재발을 방지하기 위해 정부는 최선을 다할 것이라는 성명을 발표했다.
