합법 살인
『성경』에 따르면 인류 최초의 살인자는 카인이었다. 신이 동생 아벨의 제물만 받고 자신이 바친 제물은 퇴짜 놓자 그만 홧김에 동생을 죽이고 만다. 그는 “아벨이 어디 있느냐”고 묻는 신에게 뻔뻔하게 거짓말까지 한다. “제가 아우를 지키는 사람입니까?” 신의 분노를 산 카인은 에덴의 동쪽으로 쫓겨나 두고두고 죗값을 치르게 된다.

아무리 전쟁을 합법적인 살인으로 인정한다 해도 그건 군인 대 군인에 국한한 얘기일 뿐이다. 한쪽은 민간인을 ‘인간 방패’로 삼고, 다른 한쪽은 민간인을 ‘잠재적인 적’으로 간주한 채 벌이는 이 전쟁은 결코 의로울 수 없다. 그러나 국제사회의 아우성에도 불구하고 양쪽은 쉬이 총을 내려놓을 기세가 아니다. ‘카인의 후예’라는 낙인이 두렵지도 않은 것인가.

In this war [in Gaza], one side is using civilians as human shields, while the other ⓑregard civilians as a potential enemy. This war can ⓒbe by no means justified. Despite fierce criticism from many around the world, both sides do not seem poised to ⓓresume fighting. It makes my heart hurt to see that they are unafraid of being branded as “Cain’s descendants.”
