Making tracks on a luxury train

Neon signs advertising soju joints and love motels flashed past my window. We were two hours out of Gyeongju, and Haerang, Korea’s first sleeper train, was shuttling through the darkened North Gyeongsang countryside.

차창 밖으로 술집과 러브호텔의 네온등이 휙휙 스치고 지나갔다. 두 시간 전에 경주에서 출발한 한국 최초의 숙박열차 ‘해랑’은 어둑해진 경북 교외를 달리고 있다.
The facilities inside Haerang were aimed at meeting the standards of a luxury hotel. 해랑의 내부 시설은 특급호텔 수준으로 갖춰졌다.

엔진은 내 예상보다 시끄럽고 성가셨다. 침대 위에 잔뜩 옹크린 채, 나는 쉽사리 잠에 빠져들지 못 했다.
During dinner, I asked one of the train attendants from Korail, the state-run railroad operator, whether other passengers ever complained about the noise. “You shouldn’t have a problem falling asleep on this train if you walk around a lot during the day,” said the guard, “and drink a few glasses of wine before you go to bed.”

저녁 식사 때 코레일(국철 운영 회사) 승무원에게 소음 때문에 항의한 승객은 없었는지를 물었다. 그는 “낮에 많이 걸어 다니면 밤에 기차 안에서 잠 드는 데는 문제가 없을 거예요. 그리고 주무시기 전에 와인을 몇 잔 드세요.” 라고 답했다.
From Gyeongju, the train runs all night, arriving in Chuam Station, Gangwon, on the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula at 6 a.m. This is where passengers hop off to stretch their legs and catch the scenic sunrise. It’s a famous spot often featured at the end of the day’s programming when TV stations play the national anthem.

경주에서 출발한 열차는 밤새 달려 아침 6시에 한반도 동해안의 추암역(강원도)에 닿았다. 이곳은 열차에서 내린 승객들이 기지개를 켠 뒤 해돋이를 기다리는 장소다. 이곳 해돋이는 아주 유명해서 방송사들이 하루의 방송을 끝낼 때 방영하는 애국가 화면에 종종 등장한다.
Normally, it takes about three hours to get from Gyeongju to Chuam. But the sleeper train runs slower. It was remodeled on the Mugunghwa, one of the oldest, and cheapest, trains in the country. Due to the cheaper fares, mostly senior citizens and soldiers ride this train.

보통은 경주에서 추암까지는 기차로 세 시간 정도다. 하지만 숙박열차는 이보다 느리게 달린다. 해랑은 한국에서 가장 오래됐고 운임이 가장 저렴한 열차 중 하나인 ‘무궁화호’를 개조한 것이다. 무궁화호는 운임이 싸다보니 주로 노인과 군인들이 이용한다.
For Haerang, anyway, the slow engine fulfills a purpose: to stretch out the journey from one city to another in order to make an overnight package tour. The journey from Gyeongju to Chuam is part of a three-day “rail cruise,” a luxury train package that Korail has ambitiously modeled after the Blue Train, a luxury rail experience that cuts through the heart of South Africa.

어쨌거나 해랑으로선 가장 느린 엔진이 그 용도에 가장 잘 맞는다. 밤에 기차에서 숙박할 수 있도록 야간에는 목적지까지 가는 여정을 늘여야 하는 것이다. 경주에서 추암에 가는 일정은 3일짜리 ‘기차 크루즈’라는 특급 열차 패키지의 일부다. 이 패키지는 남아프리카 중심부를 관통하는 특급 열차인 ‘블루 트레인’을 코레일이 야심차게 본뜬 것이다.
The trip works rather like a sea cruise. Each day passengers are dropped in major cities across the country and a local guide picks them up at the station and takes them sightseeing. After the tour, the passengers board the train and head to the next destination.

해랑을 이용한 여행은 해상 유람선처럼 진행된다. 매일 승객들이 주요 도시에 내려 현지 안내원의 인솔을 따라 관광을 한다. 관광을 마치면 승객들은 기차를 타고 다음 행선지로 이동한다.
