Korean comic books find audiences in Africa

But local comic book publisher Daewon Culture Industry announced in January this year that “Witch Hunter” by Cho Jung-man is destined for Algeria.

한국 만화책이 북아프리카에 진출한다면 잘 믿기지 않을 것이다. 한국 만화출판사인 ‘대원씨아이’는 조정만 작가의 만화 ‘위치헌터’를 알제리에 수출하기로 했다고 1월에 발표했다.
Once overshadowed by manga, its equivalent in Japan, the local manwha industry has been moving up as a favorite as local publishers expand their fan base around the world. Korean comic books are already sold in Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America and Oceania, but “Witch Hunter,” which tells a tale of warriors fighting witches, as its title suggests, became the first to be exported to Africa.

‘망가’로 불리는 일본 만화의 그늘에 가려져 있던 한국 만화의 ‘주가’가 크게 뛰었다. 한국 만화출판사들이 독자층을 세계로 넓히면서다. 한국 만화책은 이미 아시아·유럽·북미·남미 그리고 대양주에서도 팔리고 있다. 그러나 한국 만화가 아프리카에 수출되는 것은 ‘위치헌터’가 처음이다. ‘위치헌터’는 마녀들과 싸우는 전사들에 관한 이야기다.
Other Korean publications are getting rave reviews from foreign readers, too. “Priest” by Hyung Min-woo has been translated into 15 languages, including English, French, German and Spanish, and “Ragnarok” by Lee Myung-jin is exported to as many as 30 countries.

다른 한국 만화들 역시 외국 독자들로부터 격찬을 받고 있다. 형민우 작가의 “프리스트”는 영어·불어·독어·스페인어 등 15개 언어로 번역됐고, 이명진 작가의 '라그나로크'도 30여 국가에 수출됐다.
“The first contract was signed back in 2001, and Priest was exported to more than 20 countries because one language could cover more than one country. For example, once Priest was translated into English, it became available in the U.S., Canada, Britain and Australia,” said Roh Ji-young, an official at Daewon.

“‘프리스트’의 수출 계약은 2001년에 처음 체결됐습니다. 현재까지 ‘프리스트’가 수출된 나라는 20곳이 넘습니다. 똑같은 언어를 공유하는 나라들이 여럿 있다 보니까요. 가령 ‘프리스트’가 영어로 번역 되면, 미국·캐나다·영국·호주에서 통용될 수 있는 식이죠.” 대원씨아이 노지영 팀장의 말이다.
The film rights for Priest have been sold to Hollywood. Scott Charles Stewart, who worked on Frank Miller’s “Sin City” (2005) and Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man” (2008), is said to be slated to direct. “Priest is the first manwha to become a Hollywood film, which is a great achievement for the Korean comic book industry,” Roh said.

‘프리스트’의 영화상영권은 할리우드에서 사갔다. 프랭크 밀러의 ‘신 시티’(2005), 존 파브로의 ‘아이언맨’(2008)을 영화로 제작한 적이 있는 스콧 찰스 스튜어트 감독이 메가폰을 잡을 예정이다. 노 팀장은 “프리스트는 할리우드 영화로 제작되는 첫번째 한국 만화입니다. 한국 만화산업으로선 큰 성과입니다.”라고 말했다.
The success of Priest and Ragnarok comes from the universal elements they contain. Both are based on fictional worlds and the characters’ nationalities are unclear, making it easier for readers from different countries to relate to them. The characters also look familiar to readers outside Korea. They look like typical characters from online role-playing games.

‘프리스트’와 ‘라그나로크’의 성공에는 이들 작품이 보편적인 요소를 담고 있다는 점이 한몫 한다. 두 작품 모두 허구적 세계를 기반으로 했으며, 작품 속 등장인물의 국적이 분명하지 않다. 그래서 각국의 독자들은 등장인물과의 연관성을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 등장인물들은 해외 독자들에게 매우 친숙하게 느껴지며, 특정한 역할을 수행 하는 온라인 게임 속의 등장인물처럼 보인다.
