Korean tourists killed in Yemen

Four South Koreans were killed and three others were injured in a suspected terrorist bombing attack in Yemen late Sunday night, Korean time. South Korea’s Foreign Ministry announced early yesterday that the Korean fatalities were two men and two women, while the injured Koreans were all female.

한국시각으로 일요일 밤 예멘에서 테러리스트의 공격으로 보이는 폭발로 한국인 4명이 숨지고 3명이 다쳤다. 한국 외교부는 어제 아침 사망자는 남성 2명과 여성 2명이고 부상자는 모두 여성이라고 발표했다.

희생자들은 단체 관광 중인 13명 중 일부였다. 나머지 5명은 호텔에 머물러 있었다. 사망자는 박봉간(70, 남), 김인혜(64, 여), 주영철(59, 남)과 신혜운(55) 부부다. 이들은 모두 서울 주민이다.
The ministry said the injured tourists were transferred to the Yemeni capital Sana and that they were not in critical condition. The South Korean government dispatched officials to Yemen yesterday for further investigation.

외교부는 부상당한 관광객들은 예멘의 수도 사나로 옮겨졌으며 이들이 위독하지는 않다고 밝혔다. 한국정부는 어제 예멘으로 조사단을 파견했다.
According to the Seoul-based travel agency Themesay Tour, the tourists left Korea on March 9 and were scheduled to leave Yemen today. The ministry said the victims were on a sightseeing trip and were not part of a religious group.

서울 소재 테마세이 투어 여행사에 따르면 그 관광객들은 3월9일 한국을 떠났고 오늘 예멘을 떠나기로 예정돼 있었다. 외교부는 희생자들은 관광여행 중이었고 종교단체 소속은 아니라고 밝혔다.
A high-ranking Foreign Ministry official said the explosion occurred as the tourists posed for photographs near the fortress city of Shibam. Shibam is a Unesco World Heritage Site and is known as the “Manhattan of the desert” because of its high-rise 16th century mud brick buildings.

한 외교부 고위 관료는 관광객들이 요새 도시 시밤 부근에서 사진을 찍고 있는 동안 폭발물이 터졌다고 말했다. 시밤은 유네스코가 지정한 세계문화유산 등록지로 16세기에 진흙벽돌로 지은 고층건물 때문에 ‘사막의 맨해튼’으로 알려져 있다.
The tour agency said the bombing was unexpected and that the Shibam area was included on the itinerary because of its scenic landscape and its relative safety.

여행사는 아름다운 풍경과 상대적 안정성 때문에 시밤 지역을 여행 스케줄에 포함했으나 폭발은 예상하지 못했다고 말했다.
As of yesterday afternoon, officials in Yemen and South Korea were trying to determine the nature of the bombing. A Yemeni security official told AP that it was a suicide bombing, while another said it was a remote-controlled roadside bomb.

어제 오후 현재 예멘과 한국의 당국자들은 폭발의 성격을 파악하는데 주력했다. 한 예멘 공안 당국자는 AP통신에 자살폭탄 테러라고 말했으나 다른 당국자는 원격조정으로 터뜨리는 길거리 폭탄이라고 말했다.
