Royal seal
seal used by Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty and the first emperor
of the Korean Empire. The seal was purchased by the museum last December
from a private Korean-American collector. The museum spent three months
analyzing the authenticity of the seal, which went missing during the Korean War (1950-53). Museum officials believe the seal was produced sometime around 1901-1903 as it was used in an autograph letter sent to the Italian emperor in 1903. The seal, made from a mix of gold and silver, is 4.8 centimeters-tall and weighs 794 grams. [YONHAP]
국립고궁박물관이 3월17일 조선왕조의 26대 왕이고 대한제국의 초대 황제인 고종의 국새를 공개했다. 박물관은 지난 12월 재미교포 소장자로부터 거북이형 손잡이가 있는 이 국새를 사들였다. 박물관은 한국전쟁(1950-53) 기간 중에 사라졌던 이 국새의 진위여부를 확인하기 위해 3개월 동안 분석했다. 박물관 관계자들은 1903년 이탈리아 황제에게 보낸 친서에 이 국새의 인영이 찍혀있기 때문에 1901-03년 무렵에 제작됐을것으로 보고 있다. 금과 은의 혼합으로 만들어진 이 국새의 높이는 4.8cm에 무게는 794g이다. [연합]
