A crowd of Japanese tourists waits for Lotte Department Store to open in Sogong-dong, central Seoul, yesterday morning outside the main entrance. “문장의 뼈대인 주어 자리에 ‘a crowd’(인파가)가 왔습니다. (of Japanese tourists) ‘일본인 관광객들로 이뤄진’의 뜻으로 ‘a crowd’를 수식합니다. 다음으로 서술어를 찾아야 하겠죠? 주어가 s가 없는 단수 형태이므로 서술어 자리에는 s가 붙는 동사가 옵니다. 서술어는 ‘waits’(기다리다)가 됩니다. 기다리는 것은 (for Lotte Department Store) ‘롯데 백화점이’ {to open} ‘열리기를’ 기다리는 것입니다. 백화점은 (in Sogong-dong) ‘소공동에 있는’ 곳이고 소공동은 (central Seoul) ‘서울 도심에 있는’ 곳입니다. 사진의 시점은 (yesterday morning) ‘어제 아침’이고 사람들이 (outside the main entrance) ‘정문 밖에서’ 기다리고 있는 모습입니다.

“두 번째 문장은 수식어가 먼저 나옵니다. (with the high appreciation) (of the yen)은 ‘엔화의 가치상승으로’의 뜻이 됩니다. 그 다음에 문장의 뼈대인 주어, 서술어, 보어가 왔습니다. Japanese nationals(일본국민들이)….are(있다)….flocking(모여들고)…. 문장의 뼈대만 먼저 말해 보세요. 나머지 수식어 부분을 살펴 보겠습니다. (to Korea)는 ‘한국으로’의 뜻입니다.
