A student touches the cheek of “Saya,” a robot teacher at Kudan Elementary School in Tokyo, yesterday. Developed by a Tokyo University of Science professor, Saya can express surprise, fear, disgust, anger, happiness and sadness. Remote-controlled by a human watching the interaction through cameras, Saya called out children’s names, spoke pre-programmed phrases and questions, and gave a lecture about robots, showing a video on her android counterparts.
