우측보행
오른손잡이라면 왼쪽 허리춤에 칼을 차는 게 맞다. 진검을 차고 거리를 활보하던 일본의 사무라이들은 그래서 좌측 보행을 하는 습관이 몸에 뱄다. 맞은편에서 오는 사무라이와 칼집이 부딪쳐 시비가 붙는 불상사를 피하기 위해서다. 한걸음 더 나아가 오늘날 일본의 자동차들이 좌측통행을 하고, 따라서 핸들이 오른쪽에 장착돼 있는 것도 이 같은 과거의 보행 습관에서 비롯됐다는 설명까지 나온다. 많은 일본인이 그렇게 알고 있지만, 근거가 확실한 얘기는 아니다.

정부가 88년 묵은 좌측보행 원칙을 우측보행으로 바꾼다고 발표했다. 그래야만 차도에 인접해 걷는 사람이 마주 오는 차량을 보면서 걸을 수 있어 사고 예방에 유리하다는 것이다. 인구의 90%에 가까운 오른손잡이에겐 우측보행이 인체 속성상 합리적이란 설명도 덧붙였다.
