최근 세상을 떠들썩하게 한 미 중앙정보국(CIA)의 고문 파문도 그렇다. 알카에다 대원들에게 하루에 여섯 번씩 물고문을 가해 얻은 정보로 미국을 테러 위험에서 구했다는 게 보수파의 주장이다. 설사 어느 정도 근거가 있다 해도 때가 어느 땐데 목적이 수단을 정당화한다고 목청을 높이는지 기가 막힐 따름이다.

미국의 진짜 목적이 화풀이가 아니라 정보였다면 다른 방법도 있지 않았을까. 한국전 당시 미군 포로에 대해 중국군이 펼친 고도의 심리전을 예로 들 수 있겠다. 군사정보를 캐내려 무자비하게 미군들을 고문했던 북한군과 달리 중국군의 무기는 작문이었다. 미국을 비판하는 강도가 조금씩 높아지는 글을 쓰도록 유도했더니 나중엔 미군들 스스로 변해서 적극 협조하더란 얘기다. 손가락 하나 건드리지 않고 원하는 걸 얻었으니 CIA보단 몇 수 위 아닌가.

Unlike their brutal North Korean partners, ⓑChinese ⓒhad made American prisoners ⓓto criticize their country in writing ⓔin the aim of squeezing out valuable military information. They repeated the method until Americans were brainwashed to turn bellicose against their country in their writings.
