Roh arrives in Seoul to face prosecutors

Former President Roh Moo-hyun appeared at the nation’s top prosecutors’ office yesterday to face questioning about alleged cases of corruption during his term in office. Roh, who was president from 2003 to 2008, is a suspect in an influence-peddling scandal involving his long-time financial backer Park Yeon-cha.

노무현 전 대통령이 재임 중 비리 의혹과 관련한 조사를 받기 위해 어제 대검찰청에 출두했다. 2003년부터 2008년 까지 대통령직을 맡았던 노무현 전 대통령은 오랜 기간 그에게 돈을 제공한 박연차 회장이 연루된 알선 수뢰 스캔들에 피의자 신분으로 소환됐다.
“I am ashamed,” Roh said as he arrived at the Supreme Public Prosecutors’ Office at 1:30 p.m. Facing a barrage of questions from journalists, the solemn-faced former human rights lawyer said, “Let’s do this next time,” and walked into the prosecution’s building. Outside the prosecutors’ office compound, Roh’s backers gathered to show their support. Next to Roh’s loyalists, a group of conservatives held a rally demanding Roh be detained for further questioning.

오후 1시 30분에 대검찰청에 도착한 노 전 대통령은 “면목이 없습니다”라고 말했다. 빗발치는 기자들의 질문에 인권 변호사 출신인 노 전 대통령은 어두운 표정으로 “다음에 합시다”고 답한 후 검찰청 건물로 들어갔다. 검찰청 청사 밖에서는 노 전 대통령의 후원자들이 그에 대한 지지를 표명했다. 바로 옆에선 보수세력이 노 전 대통령의 구속 수사를 요구하는 집회를 가졌다.
The nation’s major broadcasters tracked Roh’s movements live yesterday. Roh left his home in Bongha village in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang, earlier in the morning. He traveled more than five hours on a bus to face questioning. “I am ashamed before the nation’s people. I am sorry that I disappointed you,” the beleaguered former president said before boarding the bus provided by the Lee Myung-bak Blue House. “I will be back safely.”

국내 주요 방송사들은 어제 노 전 대통령의 일거수 일투족을 생방송으로 중계했다. 노 전 대통령은 이른 아침 경상남도 김해의 봉하마을을 떠나 조사를 받기 위해 5시간 이상 버스를 타고 이동했다. 궁지에 몰린 노 전 대통령은 청와대가 제공한 버스를 타기 전 “국민 여러분께 면목이 없습니다. 실망시켜드려서 죄송합니다. 잘 다녀오겠습니다”라고 말했다.

Roh has been accused of receiving $6 million in bribes from Park Yeon-cha, a Busan-based businessman at the center of a widening scandal. According to prosecutors, Park paid $5 million to Roh’s niece’s husband and another $1 million won to Roh’s wife, Kwon Yang-sook. Roh said the money dealings were legitimate and he did not know about them when he was president, but prosecutors have their doubts.

노 전 대통령은 불거져 가는 스캔들의 중심에 선 부산 소재의 박연차 회장으로부터 6백만 달러를 받은 혐의를 받고 있다. 검찰에 따르면 박 회장은 노 전 대통령 조카사위에게 5백만 달러를 건넸고 노 전 대통령의 부인인 권양숙 여사에게 1백만 달러를 준 것으로 알려졌다. 노 전 대통령은 돈 거래가 모두 합법적으로 이뤄졌고 대통령 재직 당시에는 돈 거래 사실을 몰랐다고 주장하지만 검찰은 이에 의심을 품고 있다.
The prosecution says Roh may face an indictment on a broader bribery charge if it’s revealed that he had prior knowledge about the money. The former president will also be questioned about a separate corruption allegation concerning his Blue House aide, Chung Sang-moon. Chung has been accused of embezzling 1.25 billion won ($936,250) of presidential office money and receiving a 300-million-won bribe from Park while Roh was president.

검찰은 노 전 대통령의 돈 거래 사실을 미리 알았다는 사실이 입증이 되면 더 광범위한 뇌물 혐의로 기소 될 수도 있다고 말한다. 노 전 대통령은 이와는 별개로 정상문 전 청와대 비서관이 연루된 비리 사건과 관련된 조사도 받을 예정이다. 정 전 비서관은 노 전 대통령의 재임 중 12억5000만원에 달하는 청와대 공금을 횡령하고 박연차 회장으로부터 3백만 달러의 뇌물을 받은 혐의를 받고 있다.
Roh is now Korea’s third former president to appear in front of a criminal investigation. Former presidents Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae-woo, two military leaders-turned presidents, were convicted of treason, mutiny and corruption and served jail terms in 1995. Both were pardoned in 1997.

노 전 대통령은 범죄 수사를 받은 세 번째 전직 대통령이 되었다. 군부 출신인 전두환, 노태우 두 전 대통령은 반역, 폭동, 비리 혐의로 유죄 선고를 받고 1995년에 복역 했다. 이 둘은 1997년에 사면되었다.
