BC rolls out hanji paper credit card
Now Korean government’s recent mantra of “green growth” has made its way to credit card industry as well.BC Card, one of Korea’s largest credit card issuers, announced yesterday it would roll out a new credit card made of hanji, traditional Korean handmade paper, later this month. The credit card, made of several sheets of the paper, will be waterproofed and as durable as ordinary cards.
But they will also be biodegradable, BC Card said, and will not generate dioxin, a toxic chemical substance, when incinerated, as plastic credit cards made of polyvinyl chloride do.
“The cost to produce a hanji card, which requires a delicate manufacturing process and expensive hanji paper, is about four or five times the cost to make ordinary credit cards,” the company said. “But we will apply the hanji card idea to our new credit cards to join the green growth campaign.”
It was not the first time BC had unveiled cards with eco-friendly features. Lst month it introduced a new card made of corn that biodegrades and generates no toxic chemicals when burned.
