존엄사
2004년 아카데미 작품상을 수상한 영화 ‘밀리언 달러 베이비’는 흥행과 비평 양면에서 큰 성공을 거뒀지만 장애인 인권단체로부터는 극렬한 비판을 받았다.
이 영화에서 늙은 권투코치 역을 맡은 클린트 이스트우드는 딸처럼 아껴온 선수가 사고로 목 아래 전신마비에 빠지자 독극물 주사로 안락사를 돕는다. 극중에선 본인의 의사를 존중한 행위였지만 장애인 단체들은 “어떻게든 살아가려는 장애인들의 의지에 찬물을 끼얹었다”며 항의에 나섰다.
