Bill Clinton: The time to act on climate is now

지구온난화에 대처하는 방안을 논의하는 국제 기후변화 포럼에 참석하기 위해 전세계 도시 지도자들이 어제 서울 신라호텔에 모였다.
About 80 mayors from 40 member, 17 affiliate and other cities with hundreds of policymakers, business leaders and experts are participating in the biennial international conference which will conclude on Thursday. Seoul is the first city in Asia to host the biennial summit after London in 2005 and New York in 2007.

목요일에 폐막하는 이 격년 국제회의에 40개 회원 도시와 17개 준회원과 비회원 도시들의 시장 80여명, 수백 명의 정책결정자들, 재계 인사들과 전문가들이 참석했다. 2005년 런던, 2007년 뉴욕에 이어 서울은 아시아에서 이 국제회의를 주최하는 첫 번째 도시이다.
In the keynote speech at the opening of the third C40 Large Cities Climate Summit hosted by Seoul Metropolitan Government, former U.S. President Bill Clinton said cities need to work together to overcome the global threat.

서울시가 주최한 제3회 C40 대도시 기후 정상회의 개막식 기조연설에서 빌 클린턴 전 미국 대통령은 도시들이 전지구적 위협을 극복하기 위해 협력해야 한다고 말했다.
“We know that if we don’t reduce greenhouse gases by somewhere [of] 80 percent by 2050, bad things are going to happen… It is absolutely certain that something worse will happen and consequences will be so severe that we won’t be able to save the planet for our grandchildren unless we’re willing to undertake enormously expensive projects,” Clinton said.

“만약 2050년까지 온실가스의 80퍼센트 가량을 줄이지 않으면 나쁜 일이 일어날 것이라는 걸 우리는 압니다… 뭔가 더 나쁜 일이 일어날 것이 매우 확실합니다. 그 결과는 너무나 심각해서 만약 우리가 엄청나게 비싼 경비를 들여 대책을 시행하지 않는다면 우리 자손들에게 안전한 지구를 물려주지 못할 수도 있습니다.
Citing UN statistics, Clinton said half of the world’s population lived in cities last year and that figure is expected to grow to 70 percent by 2050. Cities occupy 2 percent of the world’s landmass, but are responsible for more than two-thirds of global energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, he added.

지난해 도시에 거주하는 인구가 전세계 인구의 절반 가량이고 그 비율은 2050년까지 70 퍼센트로 증가할 것이라고 클린턴은 UN통계를 인용해서 말했다. 도시들은 전세계 대륙의 2 퍼센트를 차지하지만, 전세계 에너지 사용과 온실가스 발생의 3분의 2 이상을 차지하고 있다.
