Tying the knot with herbs, nettles and hanji

A snow-white wedding gown adorned with a string of beads, pearls and crystal sequins is a dream for almost every bride, but for 30-year-old bride Seonwoo Young, such a gown means something different.

유리구슬과 진주·크리스탈 장식이 줄줄이 박혀 있는 순백 색의 웨딩가운은 거의 모든 신부들이 꿈꾸는 것이다. 하지만 서른살의 신부 선우영씨에게 그런 가운은 의미가 다르다.
Seonwoo is well aware of how much bleach is needed to make a bridal gown as white as milk. She also knows it takes hundreds of years for a wedding gown made with polyester to break down in a landfill.

선우영씨는 우유처럼 흰 색의 신부복을 만드는 데 표백제가 얼마나 많이 쓰이는지를 잘 알고 있다. 폴리에스테르 소재의 웨딩가운이, 매립지에서 분해되는 데에 수백년이 걸린다는 것도 익히 알고 있다.
With these thoughts in mind, Seonwoo chose an ivory-colored dress made with hanji, or Korean traditional mulberry paper. The dress, which is, of course, washable, was designed and made by eco designer Lee Kyoung-jae. After her May 9 wedding, Seonwoo’s wedding gown will be altered into an everyday dress by Lee.

이런 생각에서 선우영씨는 한지(닥나무로 만든 전통 한국 종이)로 만든 상아빛 드레스를 선택했다. 이 드레스는 물론 세탁도 가능하다. 생태디자이너 이경재씨가 옷을 지었는데, 5월 9일 결혼식 이후에는 선우영씨가 일상복으로 입을 수 있도록 이경재씨가 신부복을 고쳐줄 것이다.
Another green move was for Seonwoo and her fiance Kim Nam-hong to send wedding reception leftovers to a food bank and donate money to offset carbon dioxide emitted from their wedding through the Love Green campaign.

선우영씨, 그리고 약혼자 김남홍씨의 또 다른 ‘녹색 실천’은 결혼 피로연 때 남은 음식을 푸드뱅크에 보내고, 그들의 결혼식에서 발생한 이산화탄소를 상쇄할 수 있는 돈을 ‘러브 그린 캠페인’에 기부한 것이다.
The campaign encourages couples to fund tree planting at the World Peace Forest in Yeongjong Island, Incheon. The campaign is organized by the civic group Forest for Life, where Seonwoo is a team manager in the City Forest Department.

이 캠페인은 연인들이, 인천시 영종도 ‘세계 평화의 숲’에 나무를 심는 데 기금을 보태도록 권장 하고 있다. 이 캠페인은 ‘생명의 숲’이라는 시민단체가 기획 했다. 선우영씨는 이 단체의 ‘도시숲’팀 팀장이다.
Weddings and carbon dioxide emissions might seem quite the unlikely pair, but according to Forest for Life, a single wedding emits nearly 4,000 kilograms (8,818 pounds) of carbon dioxide. In comparison, the average Korean produces 9,860 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year, according to the latest figures from the Korea Energy Management Corporation.

결혼식과 이산화탄소 방출은 별로 상관이 없는 것처럼 보일지 모른다. 하지만 ‘생명의 숲’에 따르면 한 번의 결혼식에서 약 4000㎏(8818 파운드)의 이산화탄소가 발생한다. 한국에너지관리공단의 최근 통계에 따르면 한국인은 평균적으로 연간 9860㎏의 이산화탄소를 배출한다
“Hundreds of visitors drive their cars to a wedding and honeymooners usually fly off someplace. And many things are discarded after a wedding such as flowers and disposable goods,” said Choi Seung-hee, an activist from Forest for Life.

생명의 숲 활동가인 최승희씨는 “수백 명의 하객이 결혼식장에 차를 몰고 오지요. 신혼부부들은 대개 비행기를 타고 멀리 신혼 여행을 갑니다. 그리고 결혼식이 끝나고나면 꽃이나 일회용품 같은 게 다량 쓰레기로 나옵니다” 라고 설명했다.
