똑똑한 군중
‘세계 최고의 섹시한 왕자’로 꼽히는 그는 학창 시절 내내 ‘여복(女福)’에 시달렸다. 친구들과 술집에 갔다가 느닷없이 100명도 넘는 여학생들이 괴성을 지르며 달려드는 바람에 피신한 적도 있다. 한 지역 신문이 왕자가 가는 곳마다 귀신같이 알고 나타나는 이들 여학생 부대의 비결을 추적 보도했다. 바로 휴대전화 문자메시지였다. 왕자를 처음 발견한 뒤 이 소식을 100명에게 알리는 데 몇 초면 충분했다는 거다.

ⓑ One time → On one occasion 한 가지 경우를 나타내고 있으므로 ‘on one occasion’으로 수정. 참고로 ‘one time’은 ‘한 번’이라는 의미임
ⓒ in → at 문맥상 술집 안이라는 공간적 개념보다는 위치적인 개념을 나타내고 있으므로 전치사 ‘at’으로 수정
ⓓ mass → swarm ‘떼를 지어서 몰려들다’라는 의미의 ‘swarm’으로 수정. 참고로 ‘mass’의 경우는 ‘한 덩어리로 만들다’라는 의미를 지니고 있음
언론 취재가 통제된 상황에서 CNN도 BBC도 이들의 손끝에 철저히 의존할 수밖에 없다. 일종의 하이브리드 저널리즘이다. 속도와 접근성에서 그 어떤 신문·방송도 휴대전화를 든 군중을 따라잡을 수 없으니 불가피한 결합일 터다. 단, 잘못된 ‘네다’ 사진이 떠돈 것처럼 엄존하는 한계를 어떻게 넘어설지가 우리 모두의 숙제다.
