[Letters] More time needed to overhaul education system

I wholly agree with the opinion posted on Aug. 13 saying that “our education is too chaotic.”

There are simply too many changes made in the education system too often. Especially when there is a change in political power, there are many changes expected in the education system.

It is becoming a cause of such concern in Korea where students and their parents have such a passion for consuming higher education and are obsessed with university entrance.

I, as a student preparing for the university entrance exam this year, notice a lot changes in the entrance exams.

The major one is that the system has become so diverse with new practices such as the university admission officer system. I think the attempt to evaluate students’ potential, talent, personal circumstances and overall high school performance is an ideal way to give opportunities to students.

However most students are confused by or unaware of the new systems. Since such systems are implemented so quickly, schools have a hard time following them and preparing each student for the exam.

This is leading more students to rely on private institutes for more up-to-date information and adequate preparation.

Therefore, we need a more carefully prepared education system that gives enough time to students and schools to get prepared, which will stop the dependence on private education.

Diversification is needed as well as various kinds of entrance exam formats in the current society. So let’s take one step at a time in the pursuit of an ideal education system.
