Toshihide Maskawa, 69, Nobel laureate in physics 2008 and a professor at Kyoto Sangyo University in Japan, yesterday speaks at the Yumin Memorial Lecture on “When can Korea produce Nobel laureates in science?” at Lotte Hotel Seoul in Sogong-dong, central Seoul.

Maskawa spoke for 50 minutes without a script and urged listeners to encourage youngsters in the sciences and to realize their goals by trial and error, like Don Quixote.

The lecture was sponsored by the Yumin Cultural Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in memory of the late Hong Jin-ki, co-founder of the JoongAng Ilbo, sister paper of the JoongAng Daily. By Shin In-seop
