[NEW RELEASES] Colbie Caillat“Breakthrough”

But whereas Coco favored the acoustic, coffee house sound that made her a MySpace sensation, Breakthrough polishes up the instrumentals with a result that, unfortunately, sounds like it’s been manufactured by the big record labels.
Her single “Fallin’ for You” appeals more to the easy listening set than to her intended young pop audience. Caillat’s voice is still as earthy and comforting as ever, but the album’s high note comes when she steps out of her comfort zone. In the surprising, R&B-influenced tune “Fearless,” lush production and beats match the pained, emotional pull of the lyrics, voiced by the singer’s artful alternation between a throaty alto and a vulnerable falsetto.
But, for the most part, Caillat keeps things easy and breezy - a move that shows she’s not a musician ready to take risks. By Hannah Bae
