[WHAT’S NEW] Revised registration policy starts this month

The Supreme Court recently announced that a revised rule allowing family registration certificates for immigrants to include nationalities and alien registration numbers will go into effect this month, removing some inconveniences for foreigners.

Immigrants who are part of Korean families can get on the Family Relation Register by visiting the relevant city hall or district office and bringing along their alien registration cards.

Koreans with citizenship in other countries must bring their domestic residence cards.

Before the rule revision, only the gender and date of birth of an immigrant who is part of a Korean family were recorded on the Family Relation Register, making it difficult to verify family relations between a Korean member and a foreign member of a family.

Until now, many immigrants in this situation had to bring along a Korean family member to sign up or use various services.
