Civic presents from overseas auctioned for charity

Teacups, commemorative coins for the Olympic Games, paintings and ornaments that official overseas delegates have given to mayors of Seoul over the past 30 years are going to be put up for auction online to raise money for charity, the city government announced yesterday.

All proceeds will be given to low-income families.

Altogether 141 items from over 40 countries will go under the hammer.

Notable items include an emerald gemstone that Maria Patricia Arbelaez, a Miss Universe representative from Colombia, gave the then-mayor Chung Sang-chun in July 1980 when Seoul hosted the Miss Universe competition, a first for Korea.

Colombia is well-known for the quality of its emeralds.

Another is a wooden jewelry box that the wife of Yuri Luzhkov, mayor of Moscow, gave President Lee Myung-bak in April 2004 when Lee was mayor. The top of the jewelry box is decorated with figures of people wearing traditional Russian clothes.

The charity auction will start from today and will close on Nov. 21 at either www.seoul.go.kr or http://wow.seoul.go.kr. The person who bids the highest amount for any item will win a gift.

The auction is open to all, the city government said.
