Seoul ice rink moved to Gwanghwamun Plaza

An ice rink at Gwanghwamun Plaza in central Seoul will be open to the public from Dec. 22, 2009 through Feb. 12, 2010, the city government announced yesterday.
The plaza’s flower garden will be substituted for the rink during this winter period and the ice rink that Seoul city government installed in Seoul Plaza every winter season since 2004 will no longer be operated.
Over 1.04 million people have visited the facility since it opened six years ago. The new ice rink will be 2,250 square meters (24,219 square feet), slightly bigger than the Seoul Plaza ice rink, which was 2,100 square meters, according to the city government.
The Gwanghwamun Plaza ice rink will feature three different skating areas: a large rink (1,250 square meters), a medium rink (600 square meters) and a small rink (400 square meters). The small rink will be used as a sledding area for children aged under six and people who cannot skate. “The city expects families to use the small ice rink the most because even small children under six can enjoy sledding,” Kim Jeong-seon, an official at the city’s cultural affairs division, said.
It will cost 1,000 won (86 cents) to use the ice rink facilities, the same amount as last year. There will also be figure skating, laser and fireworks shows.
