Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov will arrive here next week for a bilateral summit with President Lee Myung-bak to mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Blue House said Monday.
Parvanov, who will become the first Bulgarian head of state to travel to Seoul since 1995, will begin his three-day visit on Sunday.
“President Lee will hold summit talks with President Parvanov on Monday to discuss ways to increase substantial cooperation between the countries in various areas, including political, economic and cultural sectors,” the Blue House said in a press release.
The countries are also set to sign a defense secrecy agreement on the sidelines of the summit, government officials said. Additionally, Korea and Bulgaria will sign an agreement to boost cultural exchange between the two countries.
Apart from the summit, Parvanov is expected to visit Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Heavy Industries and the ancient tombs in Gyeongju. In order to increase business opportunities, the Bulgarian Embassy to Seoul is also scheduled to hold a forum on Tuesday with Bulgarian and Korean companies at the Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Korea and Bulgaria established diplomatic ties in 1990. Last year, trade volume between the two sides reached $215 million.
