WP supports JMnet’s foray into TV

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. media conglomerate The Washington Post Company on Friday agreed to work with the JoongAng Media Network should the Korean group win a bid to launch a general programming TV channel.

In a meeting with Hong Seok-hyun, chairman of JoongAng Media Network, Donald E. Graham, chief executive officer and chairman of The Washington Post Company, said JMnet’s foray into the broadcasting business is a very important choice given the trend in global media. The head of the Washington, D.C.-based company also expressed his hopes that the opportunity would allow JMnet to contribute to the development of the global media industry. Chairman Hong replied that JMnet’s foray into broadcasting would solidify the long-time friendship and cooperation between the two media groups.

The Washington Post and JMnet recently signed a memorandum of understanding for exchanges in content, human resources and event planning should JMnet receive final approval from the Korean government to launch a general programming TV channel.

In attendance at the meeting at Washington Post headquarters was Hong Jeong-do, chief strategic officer at JMnet; Boisfeuillet Jones, vice chairman of The Washington Post Company; and Ann McDaniel, vice president of The Washington Post Company and managing director of Newsweek magazine.

The Washington Post Company publishes The Washington Post and Newsweek and runs six broadcasting stations across six regions in the United States. JMnet has published a Korean edition of Newsweek since 1991.
