Court ruling hands 4 seats to opposition

Korean opposition parties regained four legislative seats yesterday following a Constitutional Court ruling last week that allows the succession of seats formerly held by lawmakers under proportional representation laws.
The minor opposition Pro-Park Geun-hye Alliance, which supports the influential ruling Grand National Party lawmaker, took three seats, while the main opposition Democratic Party recovered one, raising their tally at the National Assembly to eight and 87, respectively, the National Election Commission said.
All four seats were previously held by legislators elected by proportional representation but stripped of their posts for election law violations.
A total of 56 out of the 299 seats in the National Assembly are allotted to parties, to be filled depending on the number of votes each receives in general elections. Election law previously stipulated that these seats would not automatically go to members of the same party in cases where lawmakers have been convicted of violations. The Constitutional Court last week, however, ruled that such a prohibition was unconstitutional. Yonhap
