Yangcheon District launches new translation service for foreign residents

Seoul’s Yangcheon District Office recently announced that it will launch a translation service in collaboration with BBB Korea for foreigners living in the district. Initially founded as a citizens’ participation program for the Korea-Japan World Cup in 2002, BBB (Before Babel Brigade) Korea runs a volunteer program that offers free interpretation via mobile phone.
The organization offers interpretation services in 17 languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Arabic. Its volunteer staff consists of about 3,000 people and includes former diplomats, professors, linguistic professionals and others who are fluent in many different languages.
Although the Yangcheon District Office was previously only able to offer translation services to speakers of English, Chinese and Japanese, the new program will benefit more people who speak different languages, the district office said.
There are a total of 7,749 foreigners in 2,029 households in the Yangcheon District and they come from many different places, ranging from China, Japan, the United States, Southeast Asian countries and Europe.
“We expect that our new program will improve the efficiency of our foreign-related businesses as well as the living and working conditions for the foreigners in our district,” a Yangcheon District official said.
