Korail launches asbestos probe

Korail said yesterday it will investigate 1,457 train cars after initial tests revealed the presence of asbestos in heating insulators. However, an official was quick to point out that there was no immediate danger to the public. “Passengers might be concerned but they should know that the insulating heaters are sealed with stainless lids,” Kang Byeong-su said.
Korail launched its enquiry after research last week by the Korean Railway Workers’ Union revealed that large amounts of asbestos were found in heating insulators in train cars manufactured between 1986 and 1987. The data showed that the amount of asbestos ranged from 5 to 87 percent. The union called on Korail to conduct asbestos tests on 148 train cars produced before 1990 and all 148 cars tested positive.
