Songdo to host G-20 prep meeting

Deputy finance ministers from 20 of the world’s advanced and emerging economies will meet on Feb. 27 and 28 at the newly developed international business center of Songdo in Incheon, the Presidential Committee for the G-20 Summit said yesterday.
The committee, led by Sakong Il, gathered at its new office near the Blue House to decide the location for the G-20 deputy ministers’ meeting.
Songdo, a special economic enclave inside Incheon, was selected because there was only a short period of time to prepare for the event, the committee said. It is also convenient to access for foreign guests, according to the committee.
Songdo is located about 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Seoul and has a direct connection to Incheon International Airport via a highway bridge. The city is a part of Incheon’s free economic zone and its business district includes a convention center.
After Seoul was selected as the host city of the G-20 summit next November, the government has said other gatherings linked to the G-20, including finance ministers’ meetings and Sherpa organizational meetings, will be hosted by cities around the nation.
The committee also decided to send a delegation to England, which hosted the G-20 meeting last April, to learn from London’s experience. Agenda setting and other follow-up measures for the financial summit of world leaders will be discussed during the visit, scheduled to take place from Dec. 10 to 11. Lee Chang-yong, who will oversee the agenda and planning for the summit as the secretary general and Sherpa of the committee, will leave separately on Tuesday to visit the United States, Canada, England, Germany and France to meet with government officials and seek their support.
