The debate over hanok heating up

Stroll through the tangle of alleyways in the Ikseon-dong neighborhood of the Jongno District and you’re transported to another world, one where quaint wood-frame homes with ornate roofs line the streets alongside boutiques selling colorful clothing from a bygone era.

종로구 익선동의 복잡하게 얽힌 골목길들 사이로 산책하다 보면 다른 세상에 온 듯한 느낌이 들 것이다. 이 곳엔 잘 꾸며진 지붕에 나무로 만들어진 예스런 집들과 과거 시대에서 가져온 듯한 알록달록한 옷들을 파는 가게들이 함께 줄지어 서 있다.
Ikseon-dong is one of only a handful of neighborhoods in Seoul where traditional homes, called hanok, still dominate the landscape, harkening back to Korea’s not-so-distant past. The country’s rapid march toward industrialization in the second half of the 20th century often trampled cultural preservation efforts.

익선동은 서울에서 아직 한옥이 많이 남아 있는 몇 안 되는 지역 중 한 곳으로, 그리 오래 전이 아닌 한국의 과거의 모습은 드러낸다. 20세기 후반에 이루어진 한국의 빠른 산업화 발전은 종종 문화를 보존하려는 노력들보다 앞서곤 했다.
With Korea now firmly entrenched in the developed world, however, some city officials are trying to shelter areas like Ikseon-dong from the continuing push toward modernization, setting aside large chunks of money to help hanok owners renovate and upgrade their homes.

하지만 한국이 선진국으로서 자리를 잡아감에 따라 서울시 당국자들은 익선동과 같은 지역들을 계속되는 현대화 압력으로부터 보호하려는 노력을 벌이고 있다. 이는 상당한 자금을 한옥 거주자들에게 제공하여 그들이 집을 개보수할 수 있도록 돕는 방법으로 이루어지고 있다.
It's a noble goal, as the homes represent a unique cultural asset for the city and provide a window into its history. But these efforts are being met with resistance from a surprising segment of the population: the homeowners themselves.

시 입장에서 보면 한옥은 독특한 문화유산이며 또한 시의 역사를 보여주는 역할을 하기 때문에 시의 이러한 계획은 의미 있어 보인다. 하지만 이러한 노력들은 다름 아닌 한옥 거주자들의 저항에 부딪히고 있다.
Some owners say they’d rather have the government tear down their homes and build modern apartments on the land, provided they get space in the new residences. Hanok, they claim, are relatively uncomfortable in this day and age, as they have poor heating in winter, antiquated bathroom facilities and other drawbacks. These families, many of which have lived in the homes for decades, would rather reside in a modern apartment than a historical house.

몇몇 한옥 거주자들은 그들에게 거주권이 확보된다는 조건 하에 정부가 그들의 집을 허물고 새 아파트를 지어주기를 원한다고 이야기한다. 한옥은 겨울에 난방이 잘 되지 않고, 오래된 화장실과 다른 여러 단점들 때문에 현대 시대에 살기에는 불편하다는 것이 그들의 주장이다. 이들 대부분은 한옥에서 수십 년간 살아왔고, 이제 역사적으로 의미 있는 집보다는 현대식 아파트에서 살기를 원하고 있다.
“They are part of the Jongno District’s past and tradition, and I understand why people want to keep them, but modern buildings are long overdue in this area,” 64-year-old Kim Young-il, who has lived in a hanok in Ikseon-dong for close to 50 years, said. “People who don’t live in hanok do not realize how inconvenient they are. If you had a choice of choosing between a warm and modern apartment unit over an outdated hanok house, what would you do?”

“한옥이 종로구의 과거와 전통의 일부이고, 또 왜 사람들이 그것을 지키려고 하는지는 이해는 하지만 재개발은 지역에서 오래 전부터 거론되어온 문제”라고 근 50여 년간 익선동 한옥에서 살아온 김영일(64)씨는 말했다. “한옥에서 살아보지 않은 사람은 (한옥에서 사는 것이) 얼마나 불편한지 모릅니다. 당신이라면 따뜻하고 잘 갖추어진 아파트 건물과 오래된 한옥집 중에서 어떤 것을 선택하겠어요?”
Neighborhoods like Ikseon-dong - which sits in an area behind Unhyun Palace - were quite common around Seoul until the 1970s, when modern apartment and office buildings began to replace hanok. Today, there's only a handful of these hanok-filled areas left in this bustling city of 12 million people.
And Ikseon-dong might disappear from that list altogether in coming years. The neighborhood is one of numerous areas the government is targeting for redevelopment under a plan to make the city a more cosmopolitan, aesthetically pleasing place for visitors and residents alike.

운현궁 뒤쪽에 위치한 익선동과 같은 지역들은 1970년대까지만 해도 서울에서 흔히 볼 수 있었다. 1970년대 이후로 현대식 아파트와 오피스 빌딩들이 들어서며 한옥들은 사라지기 시작했고 오늘날 1,200만 인구로 붐비는 서울에는 이제 이렇게 한옥이 밀집한 지역은 소수에 불과하다.
앞으로 익선동은 이제 그 리스트에서 사라질지도 모른다. 익선동은 서울시가 시를 좀더 국제적이고 방문객과 주거민을 동시에 만족시킬 만한 곳으로 만들겠다는 계획 아래 추진하는 재개발 대상 지역 중의 하나이다.
