Admissions officers to pick more students

One out of 10 students entering universities in 2011 will be picked through an admissions officer system as universities prepare to expand the new recruiting system, the Korean Council for University Education said yesterday.

According to the group, universities will select 379,215 students for admission in 2011, up 1,074 from 2010. Of them, 231,035, or 60.9 percent of the total, will be picked in the early admission process, compared to 57.9 percent next year. Early admission considers applicants’ high school transcripts, various certificates and interviews, while routine admission places priority on the national College Scholastic Aptitude Test administered every November. Some universities will consider only the applicants’ high school records.

The council said 118 universities will utilize an admissions officer system for 2011, up from 97 in 2010. The number of students to be picked by admissions officers will also increase from 24,622 to 37,628 over the same period. President Lee Myung-bak’s administration wants to adopt the admissions officer system “by almost 100 percent” by the end of its term. The new system aims to free students from costly after-school tuition and let them enjoy more things than struggling with test results.

Admissions officers will judge the applicants’ creativity and development potential instead of knowledge in specific subjects through interviews and applicants’ experiences, including community service and extracurricular activities. The requirements vary according to different universities.

The council will distribute books on guidelines for 2011 university admission in high schools and education offices nationwide. The information can also be found at http://univ.kcue.or.kr.
